Person County Partnership for Children is the administering agency for the state funded community-based, voluntary pre-kindergarten initiative designed to prepare at-risk four-year-olds in North Carolina for success in school. Programs are to meet high quality standards with specific curriculum that is focused on preparing children in developmentally appropriate ways for success in schools (e.g. emphasis on literacy, numbers, physical/fine-motor development, and problem solving/thinking).
Requirements are established by the state of NC. The current At-Risk Criteria includes: Pre-Kindergarten students must be at-risk as defined primarily by low income. Families of children served must be at or below 75% of the state media income. Twenty percent of enrolled children may exceed this income level if they: 1) Have an identified disability, 2) Are limited English proficient, 3) Have a developmental/educational delay, and/or have a chronic health problem, and 4) Age: Children must be 4 by August 31st. They must be eligible for public kindergarten the following year. Priority for Pre-Kindergarten Services: In all counties of North Carolina, unserved Children receive top priority for NC Pre-Kindergarten services. Only after all identified unserved children whose parents choose to enroll them are served are sites to move to priorities for under-served children.
There are 154 NC Pre-Kindergarten slots available in Person County and these services are currently provided at three local child serving agencies:
Piedmont Community College Child Development Center
Early Intervention & Family Services
